When I think about what I would want the purpose of my photography to be, I always end up with the idea of it making a difference. I want to leave a positive impact on the world and raise awareness about issues we are all facing. Going through Sir Donald McCullin's work only strengthened this sentiment. Seeing the impact he's had and the light he's been able to shine on the brutality and devastation of war/conflict made me realize just how important photography is to creating change.

Here is the comment I left on Claire's blog: Hi Claire,

I thought that your presentation of Chris Jordan was fantastic. You did a great job highlighting the critical features of his work and the points that he's trying to get across in it. The first picture you went over from the "Running the Numbers: An American Self-Portrait" series was incredible and so thought provoking. Seeing it and learning how many pieces of plastic from the ocean it took to make, made me feel incredibly disheartened but also inspired to do more and raise awareness about these issues. Who knows whether that will be through my own photography or not. Either way, great work! Here is a link to their blog post and their presentation video

I think the pictures you chose for your presentation were able to show the range of Sir Donald McCullin's work. I liked that your first image showed the physical effects of war while your second showed the psychological effects. You can see the impacts war has on the communities involved through these photos. The photos you chose give an eery feeling and I agree with your evaluation of "Road to the Battlefields" that without context the photo could be evaluated as a simple landscape image.

I really liked your presentation on Sir Donald McCullin. I like the photos that you chose to discuss and agree that they are very significant. I like that you mentioned the surroundings in the photos, even if they are not the main subject, as they make up an important part of the photo. One thing I think you could've added to your presentation would be discussing more of the photographic elements of each photo. I think you could have discussed the lighting and composition a little more to tie it in better with some of the things we have learned this semester. Sir Donald McCullin's work often captures raw moments from war zones, which shows the…

Hi Owen, your presentation of Sir Donald McCullin was very interesting and informative. I thought you did a great job of not only describing these ethically evaluative photos, but also critiquing them and discussing the meaning or significance. All of the photographs you chose were so detailed and conveyed powerful messages despite being fully black and white. Similar to what you mentioned in your presentation, the second photograph of the shell shocked marine stood out to me most as well because of the nonphysical pain being represented. This artist’s work definitely brings out a lot of emotion for the viewer and highlights how impactful and important photography is, especially when used to cover things like war and conflict.
