Critiquing Photography Challenge

To start this post off, I've uploaded what I feel was my best picture from this challenge. The contrast between the jellyfish and the vibrant blue background creates a beautiful outlining effect and really brings the jellyfish to the forefront of the image. I was really happy with how this image came out. Regarding the challenges I faced in this assignment, I actually found it quite difficult to look at other people's photos and determine which category they fell into. Part of it was still being knew to many of the ideas being used but also probably a bit of overthinking on my part. I was so worried about what I thought the photographer was trying to get across that I sometimes ignored the image or doubted that I saw it in the correct way. This led me to uploading multiple images and removing them later because I thought they didn't fit very well. In the future I think I need to trust my gut on what I'm seeing in an image and not let myself second guess. This is an art class after all, and one of the most important aspects of art is that it can be interpreted in different ways. Especially for pieces that are interpretive and theoretical, I have to accept that there isn't a correct way to look at it, that is the whole point of that style.

Hi Gill! This is a great image that creates some really interesting effects with the lighting. There is a strong contrast between the focus points within the image that almost doesn't seem possible. With the bottom third containing a light you would expect the while shot to be lit up, but this isn't the case. The upper 2/3 of the image become darker as you move up with the disco ball standing out in stark contrast to its surroundings. This is a very cool effect and I'm excited to see more of your work!
